We do love the beach. We love Lincolnville Beach in particular. But the water -- even during a heat wave -- is freezing. Not
refreshing freezing, icy unpleasant freezing, unfortunately. So I've been on a search for a nearby fresh water swimming spot.
There was
an unpleasant incident involving nasty little bugs at Levenseller Pond in Lincolnville. That spot is now out!
Lake St. George State Park is only about 15 minutes from here. I have intended to check it out for ages, but didn't do it until last weekend. I'm so glad I did! It's lovely. The water is clear, and just the right temperature. Grass, instead of sand, leads right up to the water's edge -- which was a bit odd at first, but is so much tidier. And there is a great playground, which IS sandy. Well worth the $4 per adult (Maine resident) admission fee to enter the park. We went on both Saturday and Sunday -- when it was so hot. I will qualify my recommendation though -- We were there in the late afternoon both days. I don't know how mobbed it gets in the middle of the day.
Last week we also went on an insect safari, organized by the
Coastal Mountains Land Trust. They host fun, family-friendly activities several times a year, and it is well worth taking a look at their
events calendar. Between the pond incident and the beetles (Japanese and cucumber) who are attacking our garden, it was nice to think about some of the positive things insects do, and how fun some of them are to observe.
That didn't stop us from putting beetle traps around the yard to lure them away from the garden -- and toward a fateful dive into a plastic bag. They're cool looking, but they are a nuisance!
I have found two State Parks within 20 minutes of the Unity House....St. George and Swan Lake. Swan is more to the north east and St. George to the South. I am a fresh water girl and you will find me there at least once a day when I am in Unity. See you there one day....Corlis
